What Kind of Example Is Your Marriage Setting for Your Kids?

6/8/2026

marriage counseling
My wife and I have always been intentional about investing in our marriage. Throughout the years, we have attended marriage retreats, participated in marriage enrichment programs, and facilitated groups for other couples. We never viewed these activities as signs that something was wrong with our marriage. Instead, we saw them as opportunities to strengthen something that was already important to us.

A few years ago, we attended a marriage retreat that both of our recently married children attended with their spouses. During the retreat, my son, who works as a plumber, shared that some of his coworkers had teased him about attending a marriage conference. His response was simple but powerful:

"Why wouldn't I? My parents have been going to these things my whole life, and they have a great marriage."

His words reminded me that our children are always watching. They learn about relationships not only from what we say but from what we do. They observe how we communicate, handle conflict, show affection, and prioritize one another.

The very first marriage conference my wife and I attended was while we were engaged. One statement from the speaker has stayed with me for decades:

"Children are tremendously resilient when they know that Dad loves Mom and Mom loves Dad."

What a profound truth. While no marriage is perfect, children thrive when they experience the security of a loving relationship between their parents. A healthy marriage creates an emotional foundation that helps children feel safe, valued, and secure.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is not a perfect home, but a marriage that demonstrates commitment, grace, forgiveness, and love. Long after they leave home, the example we set will continue to influence how they approach their own relationships and marriages.

So, consider this question: What kind of example is your marriage setting for your children?

The investment you make in your relationship today may impact generations to come.
