How Do I Stop Overthinking Everything?

how to stop thinking and anxious thoughts

Do you replay conversations in your head? Worry about things that haven't happened? Constantly question whether you made the right decision?

If you find yourself thinking, “How do I stop overthinking everything?”, you are not alone. Overthinking can make you feel like you are solving a problem, when you're actually going around in circles. The more you think, the more anxious you become—and the more anxious you become, the more you think.

The goal isn't to stop thinking. It's to learn how to stop getting stuck in your thoughts.

5 Ways to Stop Overthinking

1. Ask: “Is There Anything I Can Do?”

If there is something you can do about the situation, identify the next step. If there isn't anything you can do right now, continuing to think about it probably isn't going to change the outcome. Try telling yourself: “I've thought about this enough for now. I'll deal with it when I need to.”

2. Stop Looking for Complete Certainty

A lot of overthinking comes from wanting to know exactly what will happen. But you can't always know what someone is thinking, how a situation will turn out, or whether you've made the perfect decision. Instead of asking, “How can I be certain?”, ask: “Can I handle this even if I don't know what will happen?” Learning to tolerate uncertainty can make a significant difference in anxiety and overthinking.

3. Question Your Thoughts

An anxious thought can feel like a fact. For example: “They haven't called me back. They must be angry with me.” Before believing the thought, ask: “What evidence do I actually have?” There may be several explanations that have nothing to do with you. You don't have to believe every thought that enters your mind.

4. Get Out of Your Head

Overthinking often keeps you focused on the past or worried about the future.
Bring your attention back to the present.
Take a walk.
Exercise.
Talk with someone you trust.
Focus on a task. Take a few slow breaths.
You aren't trying to force your thoughts away. You're choosing where to put your attention.

5. Look Beneath the Overthinking

Sometimes overthinking isn't really about the situation you're thinking about. It may be about fear. Fear of making a mistake. Fear of rejection. Fear of losing control. Fear of disappointing someone. Fear of being hurt. Understanding what is underneath your overthinking can be more helpful than simply trying to make the thoughts stop.

When Should You Get Help?

Everyone overthinks sometimes. But when excessive worrying begins affecting your sleep, relationships, work, or ability to enjoy your life, it may be time to get some help. Counseling can help you understand why your mind gets stuck in these cycles and develop healthier ways to respond to anxiety and uncertainty.

You don't have to eliminate every anxious thought. You can learn to respond to your thoughts differently.

I provide counseling for anxiety, relationship concerns, and other issues that can leave people feeling overwhelmed by their thoughts.
